SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE RESIDENCE

Santa Lucia Preserve, Carmel, 2016

The building site consists of a meadow bound on two sides with creeks and the third with a magnificent stand of redwood trees, which became a major design influencer. The design approach was to minimize disturbance to the site and orient the home to take advantage of views to the redwood grove. A plan was created with two converging plan forms, one with the major living areas on direct access with the redwood grove and the other set at an angle with views back towards the grove.

Significant building elements include roof forms that tilt up, allowing full-height views of the redwood grove; cantilever deck extensions giving the appearance that the house is floating above the meadow, and glass converging at corners to further the integration of indoor and outdoor space.
