CARMEL VALLEY RESIDENCE
The main focus of the program was to organize the home around an outdoor area. The building forms would then protect this space from the winds blowing up the valley from the ocean. Around this outdoor area, interior living spaces were organized under barrel vaulted pavilions that are linked together with flat roof circulation elements. This element is open to each living space on one side and is separated from the outdoor space by walls of glass. These two elements working together created a fluid and open movement from one space to the next. The outdoor focal point by which this composition surrounds is a terrace water element that cascades down the side of the hill ending in the courtyard. All pieces are acting together constantly reminding you of the seamless connection between interior and exterior space. The main floor living area is 5548 square feet with a basement exercise and wine cellar of 560 square feet.
A rich pallet of materials includes board-on-board siding, zinc roofing at the pavilions, cement plaster and glass curtain wall systems at the circulation elements. Interior finishes include limestone and hardwood floors, smooth plastered interior walls and eucalyptus cabinetry and wall paneling. Other unique design elements include origami-influenced metal planters at the entry, split wood and metal entry columns, mitered corner glass elements, and vaulted ceilings with a slit down them to conceal lighting. A strong emphasis was placed on coordinating the architecture with interior furnishings to ultimately create a look and style uniquely on its own.
